A New Era for Roadrunner Athletics: College of the Desert Celebrates Homecoming in New Stadium [Sponsored]

For generations of College of the Desert students, alumni and Coachella Valley families, Roadrunner football has provided a reason to come together.

This fall, that tradition has a new home.

College of the Desert completed its new athletic stadium in August, marking the culmination of years of planning, design and construction. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the new facility will provide the setting for another longstanding College tradition: the 63rd annual Homecoming game.

Stadium gates open at 5 p.m., followed by kickoff at 6 p.m. A special 10-minute drone show is planned for halftime.

The Homecoming game will give students, alumni and community members an opportunity to experience a facility that represents a significant new chapter for athletics at College of the Desert.

Planning for the project began years before the first kickoff.

An Athletics Facilities Feasibility Study completed in 2020 evaluated College of the Desert’s athletic facilities and identified a series of potential improvements. Those improvements were prioritized and organized into proposed phases, establishing a path for updating the College’s athletic spaces.

Design of the stadium phase began in 2021, with the project completed in August 2026.

At the center of the project is an approximately 20,000-square-foot stadium building that includes team locker rooms and associated support spaces, along with a roughly 3,000-square-foot weight room.

The building also includes facilities for sports officials and dedicated spaces for equipment storage, laundry, video and information technology, supporting many of the day-to-day functions required by the College’s athletic programs.

Improvements extend beyond the stadium building. The project included new sports lighting at both the football and soccer fields, as well as renovations to an existing parking lot.

Together, the improvements provide updated spaces for student-athletes to train, prepare and compete while also creating a new venue for athletic events and other opportunities to bring people to campus.

Homecoming will be one of the first major traditions to take place in that new setting.

For 63 years, the event has connected generations of Roadrunners. Alumni return to campus, current students take part in College traditions and families from throughout the Coachella Valley gather to support Roadrunner athletics.

This year’s Homecoming adds something different to that familiar tradition. For many attendees, it will be their first opportunity to see the completed stadium and experience a football game in the new facility.

The occasion also provides a look at how College of the Desert’s athletic spaces have evolved since the feasibility study was completed six years ago. What began as a series of identified facility needs in 2020 moved into design the following year and, in August, became a completed space now being used by Roadrunner student-athletes.

On Oct. 3, that new space will become part of a tradition that has been around much longer.
