Day of Events Planned to Celebrate Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

PALM SPRINGS — To honor the legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the City of Palm Springs, together with the Palm Springs Black History Committee and Marthin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee, welcomes the community to a series of events to commemorate the man.

This year’s theme is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the spirit of Nonviolence365.”

The Palm Springs Black History Committee and the Marthin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee. In addition, Mayor Ron deHarte and members of the Palm Springs City Council will be on hand.

There will be a church service on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church at 47535 CA-74 in Palm Desert.

On Saaturday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Martin Luther King Jr.  3-on-3 Youth Basketball Classic hosted by the City of Palm Springs Parks & Recreation and Palm Springs Black History Committee.

The Classix will include a Co-ed Micro-League: Ages 3-6; Little League: Ages 7-10; and Junior League: Ages 11-14. It will be held at the Demuth Community Center 3601 E. Mesquite Ave

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will observe holiday hours during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend January 18-20 with the first tram up each day at 8 a.m., the last tram up at 8 p.m., and the last tram down at 9:30 p.m. Tram cars depart at least every 30 minutes.

Tram admission is $32.95 for adults, $29.95 for seniors (65+) and $18.95 for children ages 3-10.

Special discounts and packages are available after 4:00 p.m. Twilight Tickets are $29.95 for adults and seniors, and $15.95 for children ages 3-10. Ride ‘n’ Dine Tickets, which include tram fare and dinner at Pines Café, a cafeteria-style restaurant, are $41.00 for adults and seniors, and $27.50 for children ages 3-10.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.) s a federal holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January each year. King was chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law and civil society. The movement led to several groundbreaking legislative reforms in the United States.
