Special Meeting of Desert Community College District Board of Trustees Set for Wednesday to Discuss President/Superintendent Appointment
PALM DESERT — Desert Community College District Board of Trustees will meet in special session Wednesday when it is expected to select a new permanent President/Superintendent.
Trustees will convene on Wednesday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room of Building C on the College of the Desert campus, 43-500 Monterey Ave. The only item on the agenda is Public Employee Appointment: President/Superintendent. There will be time set aside on the agenda for public comments.
During the first special session, five people and/organizations submitted written public comments all were in favor of Acting Interim Val Garcia Martin.
To recap, the four finalists selected from 73 qualified applications from across the country:
- Martinez Garcia, the three remaining semi-finalists selected to advance are
- Dr. Monica Chahal, Interim President, Clovis Community College
- Dr. Kimberlee S. Messina, President, Spokane Falls Community College
- Dr. Don Moya-Miller, Vice President/Assistant Superintendent, Rio Hondo College
It will be the second special session Trustees have called this month. During the first special session, trustees interviewed behind closed doors the four finalists for the position. If Trustees name a new President/Superintendent, it will put them right on track, even slightly ahead of where they wanted to be at this point in the search, according to the timeline they approved. The search and interview process has reportedly gone “smoothly” despite a false start, which was likely intended to derail the process.
The four finalists were part of a shared governance decision.
There was a total of 18 Search Committee Members or their designee, because those who served on the previous committee could not serve on the second committee.
