Community College Awareness Month Celebrates Accessible, Affordable Education

PALM DESERT – A community scavenger hunt, bi-lingual virtual information sessions and high school campus visits will be part of April’s Community College Awareness Month at College of the Desert.

#CCMonth, a nationwide event promoting the benefits and value of a community college education, kicks off on Monday, April 4, with COD Cares Day on five of the College’s campuses. The campus community will be provided with “something sweet,” and students will have an opportunity to share written thoughts on how they were impacted by a College of the Desert employee.

“The goal is to increase appreciation for what community colleges offer,” said Superintendent/President Martha Garcia, Ed.D. “College of the Desert delivers a convenient and reasonably priced quality education here in the Coachella Valley.”

Local high school visits are scheduled throughout April to enhance awareness of the opportunities available at the College, including career training and general education courses for transfer to a four-year university.

The College will also host a virtual informational session in English and Spanish to share college resources available to the community to help them succeed. Faculty and Staff of Color Caucus will host a Meet and Greet on April 28 at the Indio campus to build community. All are welcome to participate in the scavenger hunt, prizes will be awarded on campus at the end of the event.

College of the Desert is a significant economic driver for the region. The College generates a return on investment to students, taxpayers, and society through contributing to higher education achievement rates, job creation, additional spending, and increased tax revenue from a trained workforce and graduates’ higher lifetime earnings.
