3 years after Ernesto Guiterrez was sworn in as a member of the City Council, he is next in line to be mayor

At the City Council meets on Wednesday, Mayor Pro Tem Ernesto Guiterrez is in line to become mayor of the second-largest city in Coachella Valley. A real estate broker and developer, Guiterrez currently represent District 4, which includes Desert Princess Country Club, Outpost and the Dream Homes.

Gutierrez is scheduled to serve as Mayor for a one-year term through the first Council meeting in December 2022. Councilor Rita Lamb is on deck to be appointed to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for the same term.

The Charter of Cathedral City provides that the City Council at the first meeting in
December each year, shall appoint a Council Member to serve as Mayor for a one-year
period on a rotating basis. After the City Council appoints the Mayor, at the first meeting in December each year, the Council shall appoint a Council Member to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for a one-year period on a rotating basis.

The purpose of this section is to implement a rotating system for appointing council members to the honorary positions of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem pursuant to Section 603 of the City Charter. The appointment of individuals to serve as Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem must follow the requirements of this section.

The regular meeting of the City Council is Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
