PALM SPRINGS — David Rios, 46, is a successful real estate professional with 27 years of experience. He is also a hotelier and a professional interior designer known for his contributions to Palm Springs’ boutique hotel scene.
Following are his responses to the candidate questionnaire.
UR: Who or what motivated you to run for the City Council?
David Rios: My motivation to run for City Council stems from my deep commitment to the community and my desire to address critical issues like homelessness and housing affordability. Having experienced homelessness as a teenager, I am passionate about creating solutions that help those in need.
UR: How long have you lived in Palm Springs full time?
David Rios: I have lived in Palm Springs full-time since 2012, and I have seen firsthand the challenges and opportunities our community faces.
UR: What is your No. 1 priority for the city?
David Rios: My number one priority for the city is to promote attainable housing initiatives and address homelessness, alongside enhancing public safety. Residents in my district need to feel safe in their homes and communities, and I am committed to working closely with our police and fire services to achieve that.
UR: What makes you a better candidate than your opponents?
David Rios: I believe I am a better candidate than my opponents because, as a small business owner, I understand the importance of tourism and the economic dollars needed for our city to thrive. My unique combination of personal experience, professional expertise, and deep-rooted commitment to community service allows me to approach challenges with a well-rounded perspective. I am dedicated to finding ways to diversify funding and drive economic development, ensuring that Palm Springs can flourish in the years to come.
UR: Do you see yourself a team player or an individual who will fight for your opinion? Why?
David Rios: I see myself as a team player who values collaboration. While I will advocate strongly for my constituents, I believe that working together with fellow council members and the community leads to better outcomes.
UR: How do you deal with conflict? Give us an example.
David Rios: I approach conflict by actively listening to all parties involved and considering multiple perspectives. My goal is to maintain a neutral stance and work towards a resolution that benefits everyone while minimizing residual conflict. When I am personally involved in a conflict, I address it directly. I seek out the source of the issue and focus on finding a resolution. I believe in confronting problems head-on. It is essential to address conflict effectively to promote constructive dialogue and minimize tension.
UR: Does Palm Springs need to change way it’s been doing business? Change its image? If so, in what way?
David Rios: Yes, I believe Palm Springs needs to change the way it’s been doing business, particularly in how we address homelessness and promote economic development. We need to enhance our image by being more inclusive and innovative, attracting new businesses while supporting our existing local enterprises. This will help foster a vibrant, diverse community that benefits everyone.
