Stephen Nelson Named First Black Chair of Desert Stonewall Democrats.
PALM SPRINGS — Stephen Nelson has been named the first Black Chair of the Desert Stonewall Democrats, according to a group spokesperson.
Being the first Black Chair of Desert Stonewall Democrats means stepping into leadership with both pride and responsibility, Nelson told Uken Report.
“Desert Stonewall Democrats has always been about fighting for LGBTQ+ equality and Democratic values,” he said. “To be the first Black person to lead that organization isn’t just a milestone — it’s a signal. It says our movement is evolving. It says representation isn’t theoretical; it’s real. It’s an honor. It’s a responsibility. And it’s an opportunity to modernize how local political clubs operate — data-driven, mission-focused, unapologetically inclusive, and laser-focused on results. Being the first isn’t the finish line. It’s the starting point.”
Nelson is a prior Steering Committee member, co-chair of the Political Action Committee (PAC), and Democratic Party delegate, now leads members and is a champion of the LGBTQ+ community.
Nelson plans to build new and strengthen existing coalitions, to include our LGBTQ+ allies. His leadership pledge touts expanding membership valley-wide to truly represent the entire Coachella Valley and its surrounding communities. The board is excited to increase participation and create more meaningful opportunities for members to get involved, modernize engagement, and build our political infrastructure.
Established in the Fall of 1998, Desert Stonewall Democrats is proud to observe Black History Month each year and notes that this year is special as we have elected Mr. Nelson as Chair. We look forward to further progress in these concerning times with renewed activism and commitment to advance our mission.
Desert Stonewall Democrats remain committed to advancing equality, protecting LGBTQ+ visibility, and ensuring that local leadership reflects the values of the communities they serve throughout the Coachella Valley.
