Desert United Boys 2009

PALM DESERT — The First Desert United Soccer Team Alums, a group of passionate individuals who once shared the soccer fields and camaraderie, have come together with a noble mission. They are raising money to send the promising 2009 Boys team to Sweden for an enriching soccer experience.

The Desert United Boys 2009 Soccer Team has been invited to travel to the Gothia Cup in Sweden in July. The Gothia Cup is the largest international youth soccer cup tournament in the world. It will have more than 80 Nations participating in more than 4,700 matches in cities like Orby, Varberg and Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 2009 team derives its name from the year in which the players were born.

Desert United Soccer Club is a nonprofit Youth Soccer Organization based in Palm Desert and is celebrating its 25th Year Anniversary. It is a renowned youth soccer program dedicated to nurturing talent, fostering teamwork, and promoting sportsmanship among young athletes.

Having embarked on their own transformative journey to Sweden back in 2000, the first team members understand the profound impact such international exposure can have on young athletes. When they learned that the current squad was eager to follow in their footsteps but needed financial support, they felt compelled to step in and make a difference.

“Our Sweden trip in 2000 was more than just a soccer tournament; it was a life-changing adventure that shaped who we are today,” Eric Ceja, now the economic development director for the city of Palm Desert, said in a statement. “We believe every young athlete should have the opportunity to explore the world, hone their skills, and forge lifelong memories.”

In honor of their beloved Goalkeeper Joe Cohen, who died in 2008, the First Team has established the Joe Cohen Scholarship to perpetuate his legacy and support the dreams of aspiring soccer players.

The Boys 2009 team is still in need of assistance and is actively seeking donations through their GoFundMe page.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/desert-united-soccer-club-tournament-in-sweden

They have currently raised $2,565 of their $55,000 goal.

Additionally, they will be hosting various fundraising events; details can be found on their official website.

The Sweden trip, arranged by the Ryerson Brothers — the coaches of the first trip in 2000 — promises a blend of competitive soccer matches and cultural immersion. Participants will engage in rigorous training sessions while also exploring Sweden’s rich heritage through visits to museums, monuments, and other cultural landmarks in Scandinavia.

The Ryerson Brothers is a leading sports tour management company specializing in organizing international sports trips for teams and athletes. With a focus on providing unforgettable experiences and seamless logistics, the Ryerson Brothers ensure that every tour is a memorable and rewarding adventure.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming support from our community and fellow alums,” Coach Luis Carranza said in a statement. “This trip is not just about soccer; it’s about broadening horizons, fostering friendships, and creating lifelong memories.”
