Desert Sands Unified School District Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Preschool programs include Head Start and California State Preschool Programs with full day, part day, and home based options during the traditional school year and year round.  Programs are also available to students with IEPs (individualized education programs).

pre-school 2These programs are available to children and families residing within the DSUSD boundaries including Bermuda Dunes, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, and parts of Rancho Mirage and Coachella. Transportation is not provided. Research based curriculum to support early learning experiences with focus on social skills, early literacy, math, science, nutrition, and to support students with special needs are offered in a safe, healthy and loving environment.

Children between the ages of 3 – 5 years are eligible with priority given to those born between September 2, 2014 and September 1, 2015. Family income must meet federal and/or state guidelines. For the full day state preschool, students will be assessed a fee based on individual family factors such as income, size, and children enrolled in other fee-based programs. Families referred by Child Protective Services and/or the lowest income have first priorities. The DSUSD preschool programs operate on a nondiscriminatory basis and give equal treatment and access to services without regard to race, color, sex, creed, religion, national origin, or ancestry.  The Head Start program, by federal law, reserves 10% of all slots for children with disabilities. Desert Sands Unified School District operates early childhood learning centers at nine locations throughout Palm Desert, La Quinta, and Indio.

pre-schoolTo apply for participation in the DSUSD preschool programs, please visit the early childhood education office at the district offices located at 47-950 Dune Palms Road in La Quinta. Registration takes place Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. The offices are closed on Friday throughout the summer. The following information must be brought when applying:

  • child’s birth certificate and those of siblings under 18 years of age
  • immunization record (TB clearance and current immunizations are required)
  • proof of income
  • results from a recent medical examination
  • proof of residency within the Desert Sands Unified School District
