PALM SPRINGS —After years of frustrating road closures, the city’s The $2.195 million wind wall on North Gene Autry Trail is now complete.

The 590-foot-long brick wall is designed to significantly reduce blowing sand, improve visibility, and enhance safety. The newly constructed brick wall serves as a critical sand mitigation barrier, helping shield the roadway from drifting sand and minimizing the dangerous whiteout-like conditions that have repeatedly forced closures.

“This project addresses a long-standing safety concern for our community and corridors,” said Mayor Naomi Soto. “We heard the frustrations from drivers and took action to make the necessary infrastructure improvements. The wind wall will keep this crucial roadway open and safer for everyone.”

The $2.195 million project was awarded by the City Council in April 2025. Importantly, the majority of the funding came from Measure A, the county’s, voter-approved, half-cent sales tax dedicated to investing in local streets, roads, and regional transportation improvements. This completion marks another example of Measure A dollars at work, delivering tangible results that improve everyday life for residents.

“This wind wall represents the kind of proactive infrastructure investment our community deserves. I want to especially thank our Engineering Team and Director Joel Montalvo for their leadership and quick work in bringing this project to a successful completion,” said Scott Stiles, City Manager. “Their dedication ensured we delivered a smart, lasting solution to a long-standing safety challenge. We’re also deeply grateful to our residents for their patience throughout construction.”

Beyond improving safety, the project strengthens regional connectivity, supports tourism, and reduces costly and disruptive closures that have long affected the area.

With construction now complete, drivers can expect fewer closures, clearer visibility during high winds, and a more dependable route along North Gene Autry Trail.
