Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez Receives Paid Administrative Leave
RIVERSIDE — Embattled Coachella Mayor Steven A. Hernandez who stands accused of one felony count of conflict of interest, four felony counts of perjury, and four misdemeanor counts of conflict of interest has been placed on paid administrative leave — not just administrative leave as some news reports have stated. Brooke Federico, public information officer for Riverside County, confirmed for Uken Report.
Hernandez, 42, serves as chief of staff, a county government position, to Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. His annual salary is $182,367, which he will continue to receive while on indefinite paid administrative leave.
“The allegations against Steven Hernandez are serious, and he has been placed on indefinite administrative leave from the County of Riverside,” Communications Director Darin Schemmer said. .”Although we are still waiting on more details, it’s our understanding that the charges are unrelated to his role in our office.”
In general terms, the length of an administrative leave is unknown at the time the leave begins and is determined on a case-by-case basis, dependent upon facts as they become available, Frederico said.
“As it relates to Mr. Hernandez, please note that it is our understanding that any allegations of misconduct are not related to his role with the County of Riverside,” Frederico said.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is presumed innocent,
His next court appearance is a trial readiness conference, which is scheduled for Feb. 23, 2026.
