Public Listening Sessions to Collect Feedback on Sheriff’s Oversight Options

RIVERSIDE — The Board of Supervisors voted to establish an Ad Hoc Committee to study oversight options related to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The Ad Hoc Committee will hold a series of public listening sessions to provide residents with an opportunity to share their experiences, concerns and perspectives directly with the committee.

“The purpose of these listening sessions is to hear directly from the people we serve,” said Board Chair Second District Supervisor Karen Spiegel. “Community input is essential as we explore oversight options and evaluate what approaches may best support transparency, accountability and public trust in Riverside County.”

In addition to holding listening sessions, the Ad Hoc Committee will review how other counties and cities perform law enforcement oversight, evaluate existing oversight capabilities, as well as consider other legal, financial, and operational impacts.

“Meaningful public engagement is a critical part of good governance,” said First District Supervisor Jose Medina. “We encourage residents to take part in this process and share their perspectives as we work toward recommendations that reflect the needs and values of Riverside County communities.”

Findings and recommendations by the Ad Hoc Committee will return to the Board of Supervisors by the end of January 2027. The Executive Office, the Sheriff’s Department and other County departments provide administrative and technical support to the Ad Hoc Committee.
