East Indio Badlands Trail Opened in 2020

INDIO —The City of Indio will begin construction on improvements to the Indio Badlands Trailhead beginning today, Feb. 23.

Project improvements include a new parking lot with over 30 additional parking spaces, over 45 new trees will be planted, along with landscaping upgrades, solar-powered lighting, and a new walking path for improved access. The trail will remain open during construction and parking will only be available on Avenue 42 and Golf Center Parkway.

Construction will be completed Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and construction is expected to be completed by June 2026.

Once construction is complete, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be scheduled.

Just opened in 2020, the East Indio Badlands Trail hike offers a spectacular loop through a classic badland topography formed by thousands of years of erosion and an active San Andreas Fault. You’ll hike through slot canyons, in the shadow of tectnic uptilts, and along a prominent ridge with 360 views from the Salton See to San Gorgonio Mountain. It’s an extremely fun hike at a shorter distance that makes it accessible to almost all types of hikers, according to the Hiking Guy.
