INDIO — After serving as City Manager of Coachella Valley’s largest city for three years, Mark Scott will retire effective Aug. 15.
Scott, 70, has worked in the city management profession for 40-plus years, with 30 of those years in the role of city manager.
Scott thanked City Council members for their support and the opportunity to serve the community. “From the day I arrived, I have been very proud to be part of this talented and caring City of Indio team, Scott said in a prepared statement.
Mark has done an excellent job managing implementation of the Council’s strategic plans, Mayor Glenn Miller said in a prepared statement. “We have tremendous momentum in Indio and our goal is to continue that momentum. This may prove to be a tough time to recruit a successor, but we will begin the search immediately. We look forward to the search for the next city manager to provide continued leadership.”
The City Council appointed Mark Scott city manager on Dec. 6, 2017. Scott has previously served as City Manager in the California cities of Beverly Hills, Culver City, his hometown of Fresno, Burbank, San Bernardino, and in Spartanburg, S.C. He was the longest tenured City Manager in Beverly Hills history (14 years). Mark came to Indio from a 19-month assignment in San Bernardino helping that City’s team exit bankruptcy.
In a message to the community, Scott said, “This is an exciting time to be in Indio. We are a town full of opportunity. It is a great time for people to “invest” in Indio – as a place for a home, or a business, or simply for a good financial return! As a City official in a community with this upside, I truly feel a tremendous responsibility to all of you who choose to make your commitment here. We want to continue bringing economic development here. We want to generate good jobs, nurturing neighborhoods and great quality of life. We hear your requests for growth and progress, but also your appeals that we not sacrifice the character and quality that has made Indio special for decades. We pledge to you to do our best. We are working hard to meet you expectations and to create great memories for your families!”
