Halloween-themed event, Streets are Treats, to demonstrate infrastructure enhancements and more

Indio Hosts Streets are Treats Pop-up EventINDIO –This city’s event, Indio’s Streets are Treats, is a pop-up safety demonstration, in partnership with Indio Food Park, Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Go Human campaign, and other local organizations. The event will be held on October 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., near Indio City Hall at Miles Avenue and Smurr Street.

The Indio’s Streets are Treats demonstration uses SCAG’s Go Human Kit of Parts to build infrastructure enhancements such as parklets, buffered bicycle lanes, artistic crosswalks, and curb extensions:

  • Parklets provide curbside seating by extending the sidewalk to create more space to eat, relax, and hang out.
  • Buffered Bicycle Lanes or Separated Bike Lanes create more space between motorists and people on bikes, providing a safer and more comfortable environment for roadway users.
  • Artistic Crosswalks help create a unique sense of place and city identity.
  • Bulb-outs or Curb Extensions make crossing the street shorter and easier.

Indio Hosts Streets are Treats Pop-up Event“This event is a great way for the community to test these public spaces and street activations,” said City Engineer Juan Raya.

Community organization partnerships with Alianza Coachella Valley, Raices Cultura, and Desert Sands Unified School District, are lending their artistic talents to the event.

“We are excited to host this Halloween-themed event, which will feature safety elements for walking and biking, especially for trick-or-treaters,” said Mayor Elaine Holmes.  “This event will transform our streets into a safer and more enjoyable place for the community.”

The City of Indio received funding from SCAG’s Go Human campaign, which seeks to reduce traffic collisions and encourage more walking and biking throughout Southern California.
