Veterans for Peace, a local Veterans group, recently honored Cindy Uken

CATHEDRAL CITY — Veterans for Peace Jon Castro Chapter 19 for the Inland Empire recently honored Cindy Uken with the 2022 Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Service.

Veterans for Peace Jon Castro Chapter 19 of the Inland Empire is part of a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to abolishing war.

“We honor your leadership and devotion to our veterans,” the award states. “We are very grateful for your award-winning, honest reporting of the truth. Your work has helped to educate and improve so many lives. You are an inspiration to everyone as you lead us in the causes of liberty, equality and justice. You are a true American hero.”

Uken has been a longtime advocate for Veterans, their issues and causes. Before moving back to the Coachella Valley in 2016, Uken had the privilege of accompanying at least a half dozen Honor Flights that ferried World War II Veterans from Billings, MT., to Washington, D.C. so they could see the World War II Memorial.

Upon returning to the Coachella Valley, Uken has vigorously covered Veterans issues, including the erection of the LGBTQ Veterans Memorial in Cathedral City.

In addition to the Veterans for Peace Award, Uken received a Certificate of Recognition from the City Council of Cathedral City; a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D.; a Certificate of Recognition from 28th State Senate District Sen. Melissa Melendez; a Certificate of Recognition from 56th District Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia; and a Proclamation from Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.

In Perez’s Proclamation, he wrote, “I … take great pleasure in honoring Cindy Uken whose hard work and her great heart for the veterans community merit this most deserving recognition, and extend best wishes for continued success.”
