California Medical Association Political Action Committee Endorses Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez for Reelection

INDIO — In what some say was unexpected, the California Medical Association Political Action Committee (CALPAC) has endorsed Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez for reelection to represent California’s 36th Assembly District, adding a major voice from the healthcare community to the growing coalition supporting his campaign.

Unexpected in the sense that his opponent, Imperial Mayor Ida Obeso-Martinez, who has a background in nursing, seemed a more likely choice for the PAC Committee.

CMA does not typically conduct an interview process with incumbents.

“Since he’s been in office, CMA has developed a strong partnership with Assemblymember Gonzalez and he has been a steadfast supporter of both patients and physicians,” Erin Mellon, Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications for the California Medical Association.

The committee did not have formal interviews this time as it is an incumbent race, but staff did meet with his opposition for this year’s race, She would not elaborate.

Many people have complained about how she continually portrays herself as a medical doctor. Let’s be clear here: She is not. She often has her pictures taken in a white coat similar to those physicians wear.

She has a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. She is a cardiovascular nurse practitioner who’s been on the front lines of healthcare — just not as a physician.

Perhaps the Political PAC caught wind of that an was not amused.

The endorsement comes as Gonzalez continues to establish himself as an advocate for patients, healthcare providers, and rural communities throughout the district. In June, Gonzalez was appointed to the Assembly Health Committee, giving AD-36 a seat at the table on some of California’s most important healthcare issues.

As a member of the Legislature, Gonzalez has advocated for protecting critical healthcare services, supporting individuals with disabilities and their families, and strengthening access to care in rural and underserved communities. His legislative work has included efforts to support rural hospitals and address healthcare challenges facing farmworker communities.

“I’m honored to have the support of CALPAC and the physicians who care for families across our state,” Gonzalez said “Healthcare is personal to me, and I will continue working to ensure our doctors, medical professionals, and patients have a strong voice in Sacramento.”

The endorsement adds to a growing coalition of organizations and community leaders supporting Gonzalez’s reelection. CALPAC joins organizations including the California Farm Bureau, Riverside County Farm Bureau, Imperial County Farm Bureau, IBEW Local 47, CAL FIRE Local 2881, and others in backing Gonzalez’s campaign.
