Night road work will take place to improve Monroe Street, Avenue 42 and Jeffferson Street

INDIO —The city will be repaving Monroe Street from the I-10 bridge to the Indio Boulevard bridge, Avenue 42 west of Monroe, and Jefferson Street from Dunbar Drive to Indio boulevard from March 5, 2023, to March 10. Work will occur at night, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday to Friday morning to minimize impacts to traffic.

The total construction cost for the project is $899,933.63 and is paid for by Measure A. Measure A generates funds for transportation infrastructure in Riverside County through a half-cent sales tax.

Residents and motorists should expect significant travel delays, as traffic will be reduced to one lane during construction. Road signs for traffic control will be in place, and flaggers will assist with bike/vehicle traffic and pedestrian activity, as needed. Expect flaggers to assist drivers getting through the Avenue 42 corridor due to the medians. Traffic signals at impacted intersections will be on flashing red while the crew is working. The public’s cooperation and observance of all construction signs will also be greatly appreciated to ensure the safety of both drivers and construction crews. Access to emergency vehicles will be unaffected.

The residents in the project’s vicinity are expected to hear noise and possible vibrations (shaking) from construction activities. The construction equipment used for this project will be equipped with backup alarms (beeping) that are required by state law. The city will coordinate to keep the equipment backing up to a minimum, however, some beeping is to be expected.

This project is part of the city’s street maintenance program that restores our streets, extends its service life, and minimizes further deterioration. The work involves:

  • Removal of existing deteriorated pavement and base
  • Construction of new asphalt pavement.
  • Replacing the roadway striping and markings on the new asphalt surface.

Please direct any questions regarding the project to the City of Indio Public Works Department at (760) 391-4017.
