Palm Springs Commemorates Black History Month with Myriad Events

PALM LSPRINGS — In celebration of Black History Month, this city welcomes the community to participate in a series of free, fun, and educational events honoring the rich culture, history, and accomplishments of our African American residents throughout the month of February.

The events are organized by the Palm Springs Black History Committee, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Art Museum.

  • Gospel Fest: Word of Life Fellowship Center 64-565 Pierson Blvd. Desert Hot Springs. Sunday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. The Palm Springs Black History Committee presents an afternoon filled with music, scripture, and prayer, featuring performances by various churches and choirs from across the Coachella Valley. This is a free event, and all are welcome.
  • 15th Annual Black History Awards Gala: Hilton Palm Springs 400 E Tahquitz Canyon Way. February 1, Cocktails at 6:00 p.m., Dinner & Awards at 7:00 p.m. The Palm Springs Black History Committee Annual Awards Gala recognizes individuals, groups, local and corporate businesses who have allied or contributed to the success and achievements of African Americans and our society.
  • Palm Springs Library Presents “Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors” Speaking Event The Mizell Center 480 S. Sunrise Way. February 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event will begin at 10 A.M. at the Mizell Center, followed by a hosted lunch (for the first 100 people to register) provided by Q’s Creole and Soul Food in Sunrise Park and then will continue at the Palm Springs Public Library and will conclude at 4:30PM.   • Palm Springs Art Museum Black History Month Kick-Off February 6 at 5:30 to 8 p.m. 101 N. Museum Drive. Celebrate the start of the Month with a performance by the Palm Springs High School Choir, the Healing Rhythms West African Drum Circle, and a special mural by Allen Maldonado. Explore the museum’s exhibitions and connect with the vibrant Black community. The theme of the month-long celebration is “African Americans and Labor.” Visit psmuseum.org for a full list of the museum’s Black History Month events.
  • Black History Month Adult Basketball Tournament: Feb. 17, 9:00 a.m. James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center Gymnasium 480 Tramview Road.
  • Palm Springs Black History Tour: Feb. 17, 10:00 a.m. Departure location, James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center parking lot, 480 Tramview Rd. Highlights include: untold history, historic buildings, landmarks, and mid-century modern architecture. Participants must pre-register or arrive before 9:30 a.m. on tour day.
  • 38th Annual Black History Parade & Town Fair: February 22. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. followed by Town Fair from noon to 6 p.m. in the Downtown Park across from the Palm Springs Art Museum.
