Cathedral City Issues Proclamation Recognizing June 2021 as LGBTQ Pride Month, Raises Rainbow Flag at City Hall

CATHEDRAL CITY – The month of June 2021 has been proclaimed as LGBTQ Pride Month and his city is raising the Rainbow Flag in celebration.

Additionally, Mayor Raymond Gregory has ordered the Rainbow Flag to be flown at City Hall during the month of June.

“The Rainbow Flag celebrates our city’s diversity,” stated Mayor Raymond Gregory.  “Flying the flag at city hall during Pride Month lets the nearly 30 percent of Cathedral City residents who self-identify as being part of the LGBTQ community, as well as their allies, know that we, as a city, believe in equality and justice for all.”

Each year, June is recognized as National Pride Month as it marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion that propelled the modern-day lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights movement.

Through the city’s proclamation, the City Council encourages everyone to help advance the cause of the LGBTQ people and their families in order to achieve a more just and fair society.  Cathedral City is recognized as being 1 of only 94 municipalities in the United States to receive a perfect score by the Human Right Campaign’s annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI) Scorecard rating.

The City Council of Cathedral City has a long history of being supportive of the LGBTQ community by sponsoring the annual Cathedral City LGBT Days festival as a signature event during the last weekend in March.  It was also the first city in the Coachella Valley to pass an municipal ordinance mandating single stall public restrooms in Cathedral City to be re-classified as “gender-neutral,” fly a rainbow flag at City Hall, and create a “Rainbow Crossing” named after the late Mayor Gregory S. Pettis, the first openly gay elected official in Riverside County.
