Pair of Coachella Residents Begin Effort to Recall Two Councilmembers

COACHELLA — Coachella residents Vicente Zamora and Jesus Ahkin Gonzalez on June 10 officially filed Notices of Intention to Recall Council Members Denise Delgado and Yadira Perez.

This effort follows growing concerns regarding budget deficits, senior services, the handling of the municipal utility and data center vote, and the overall direction of the City of Coachella, Gonzalez said.

Residents deserve leadership committed to moving Coachella forward by focusing on infrastructure projects, economic stability, and serving our most vulnerable community members, the duo maintains.

The filing of these notices marks the first step in the recall process. Proponents intend to gather approximately 4,000 voter signatures to qualify the recall for the ballot.

The recall effort is limited to Council Members Denise Delgado and Yadira Perez. Council Members Stephanie Virgen and Frank Figueroa were not included because their seats are already scheduled to appear before voters in the Nov. 3.

“The future of Coachella belongs to its people,” they said.

Gonzalez said the pair hope to collect about 4,000 signatures with the aim of getting the issue on the November ballot. That will take time and money. Gonzalez said the team is “hoping to raise money from community members who want to see the city on a better path.”

The two also called for a moratorium on data centers in Coachella and started a petition drive on Change.org.
