Rep. Raul Ruiz, M.D., Endorses Stephen Nelson for Palm Desert City Council

PALM DESERT – In what some are calling a “political shot across the bow” of city and county Democratic leaders, Stephen Nelson has earned the endorsement of Rep. Raul Ruiz, M.D. Nelson is running against Anyse Smith in District 3.

Palm Desert’s newly formed District 3 is based in Northern Palm Desert, stretching across the 10 freeway, and bordering mostly north of Country Club Drive.

Ruiz earlier endorsed Karina Quintanilla for Palm Desert City Council and Mary Jane Sanchez for College Board of Trustees.

Prior to redistricting, Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz represented Palm Desert since winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. As a son of farmworkers who grew up in Coachella, Congressman Dr. Ruiz is DESERTa bipartisan leader who has delivered results for Riverside County on economic revitalization, environmental sustainability, and strengthening access to healthcare, housing, and education.

In a statement, Ruiz said, “Stephen Nelson is a tireless advocate for residents in North Palm Desert, District 3. He is a strong, accomplished voice for those who have been overlooked and has stood up to the City Council to fight for better health, education, and public safety services for every family in Palm Desert.

“Shoulder to shoulder with Mayor Karina Quintanilla, Stephen fought tooth and nail to make sure the city complies with voting rights law and immediately engaged residents in North Palm Desert in shaping the future of their city so that everyone has a voice.

“Stephen is a technology executive and community leader who brings transparency, efficiency, and results for his district and the entire city. He embraces the values and diversity of Palm Desert and knows how to put the city on a path to prosperity for decades to come. Nelson thanked Congressman Ruiz and said, “I’m humbled and deeply honored to receive the support of Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz. He is an outstanding leader for our community, and I look forward to working with him and other state and federal leaders to ensure Palm Desert has a brighter future.”

Nelson has also earned the endorsements of several local leaders, including Palm Desert Mayor Karina Quintanilla and Palm Springs Unified School District Board of Trustees President Madonna Gerrell.
