Felines-N-Fido Adoption Promotion Runs for Remainder of July

Riverside County Animal Services is offering a Felines-n-Fido special for the remainder of July. Dogs or cats can be adopted for just $5. The special comes at a time the county’s shelters have spiked with a flow of pets.

More than 600 pets are being cared for at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley. Almost 150 pets are currently in the county’s care at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms. During the heart of the pandemic the Jurupa Valley shelter was hovering at about 150 displaced pets and the Thousand Palms facility averaged 50 displaced pets.

After the pandemic, a period that saw so many people helping shelters by adopting and fostering – and keeping animals at home – the normalcy has returned. That is, people are back at work and more strays are ending up in Southland shelters. Riverside County’s shelters are certainly trending in the wrong direction: higher impound numbers per week.

“We loved watching so many pets get adopted during COVID-19 lockdowns when everyone was at home and could love their new family members with undivided attention,” Animal Services Director Julie Bank said in a prepared statement. “Now we’re hoping that those without animals might consider adopting or fostering a pet. We need the help.”

That’s why she approved the Felines-n-Fido special.

The $5 adoptions will continue through Saturday, July 31, and will include the usual adoption package: spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations and a microchip. Dog adopters will have to purchase a license if they live within Riverside County’s jurisdiction.

Would-be adopters are encouraged to view available pets using this link. (Submitting a “web interest” form via the PetHarbor link is highly recommended).

“In short, we need the public’s help again,” Bank said. “Fostering, making a donation or becoming a volunteer are also ways to help.”
