‘Singing the Songs of Resistance’ is growing, nationwide movement

RANCHO MIRAGE — Amidst the Friday morning headlines —’6 dead after KC-135 US refueling aircraft goes down in western Iraq,” “Suspect in Michigan synagogue attack lost family in Israeli strike on Lebanon: Mayor” — and more, Singing Resistance Coachella Valley announced it will meet on Friday March 20 to sing songs of resistance in these dark times.

Everyone is welcome at this event.

The gathering is 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday March 20 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert, 72425 Via Vail in Rancho Mirage. Doors open at 5:45.

“Coming together in singing and chanting amplifies our voices and shares our vision of the beloved community in ways that can’t be ignored,” said Rev. Ian Riddell, the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert.

“Throughout our history movements for change and justice have sung and chanted new realities into our hearts and minds,” Rev. Riddell continued. “Pete Seeger once said: ‘Songs are sneaky things. They can slip across borders. Proliferate in prisons. Penetrate hard shells . . . I always believed that the right song at the right moment could change history.’ And the practicing of singing in a group can bring us inspiration and connection and deep healing as we experience and create both calm beauty and joyful noise together.”

“Singing the Songs of Resistance” is a growing, nationwide movement– rooted in cities like Minneapolis and spreading across the nation — that uses community singing to foster solidarity, hope, and dissent in the face of rising authoritarianism, systemic violence, anti-immigrant policies, and wars.
