If you have been wanting to adopt a cat, now is the time Riverside County Animal Services is lowering all cat adoptions to $20 during a special promotion called Socks for Sox.

The Socks for Sox campaign is a partnership between Animal Services and other county agencies that work directly with the homeless.

Anyone who brings in a pack of socks can adopt a cat for just $20. All donated socks will be provided to those that are currently homeless.

“We chose Socks for Sox, since Sox has been such a popular name for cats,” Jackie Schart, who oversees adoptions at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, said in a prepared statement. “We figured Socks for Sox would be a memorable name for this campaign. It’s playful, but we understand that homelessness is a serious issue and we want to do our part to help those in need.”

The special Socks for Sox campaign will run through the month of October at each of the county animal shelters, located in Blythe, Jurupa Valley, San Jacinto and Thousand Palms.

Addresses can be found by visiting the department’s website.

Socks for Sox Campaign Lowers Cat Adoption Fee“All of our shelter animals are homeless until that wonderful day when someone adopts,” Schart said. “Although we would not want to compare homeless pets with people living on the streets, we do have a full appreciation of this serious problem.”

Working with the homeless population is something Schart and her colleagues have experienced in the past, she said.

“We know the homeless well,” she said. “We have helped those that are homeless get reunited with their pets that end up in our county shelters. Some of these people love their pets more than anything else in the world, but oftentimes do not have the resources to pay for impound fees and the like. So we try to make that reunion process as easy as possible.”

Donating socks is a small token — but an important one — to provide some comfort for those that need all the help they can get, Schart said.
