Thousand Palms Canyon Road Repair Project to Start Construction in June

INDIO HILLS – The Thousand Palms Canyon Road Resurfacing Project, a $4.8 million major project that will fix up and improve the entire 4.2-mile length of Thousand Palms Canyon Road won approval from Riverside County Supervisors this week. The scenic road runs between the community of Thousand Palms and the communities of Indio Hills and Sky Valley.

The project is expected to improve vehicle safety, provide wider shoulders for bicyclists and enhance the road used by many hikers and visitors to the Coachella Valley Preserve.

The Riverside County Transportation Department will make a presentation on the project at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at a Zoom meeting of the Indio Hills Community Council (click here for meeting link). Community members can learn about the project, the plans for construction and have their questions addressed.

“I am glad we are nearing construction for the resurfacing and widening of Thousand Palms Canyon Road, a beautiful drive from Thousand Palms to our unincorporated communities in the northern part of the valley,” Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said in a prepared statement. “This will make travel much smoother and safer for our residents, visitors to the Oasis Preserve, and bicyclists, who will have a widened shoulder to use.”

The Thousand Palms Canyon Road Resurfacing Project will begin construction in June, following the Riverside County Board of Supervisors’ approval of the construction contract, awarded Tuesday to Matich Corporation of San Bernardino.

The project will resurface the deteriorated roadway with a new pavement, provide five‑foot‑wide paved shoulders for bicycle use, and add turn pockets for two driveways near the Coachella Valley Preserve. Other safety enhancement measures include rumble strips, signage and striping.

The total budget of the road repair project is $4.8 million, and is funded from the county’s SB 1 funds, generated from the gas taxes and vehicle registration fees paid by motorists.

The work will be phased to keep the road open during construction as much as possible. Construction is expected to be completed in late summer 2022.
