Senior Citizen Victim of Hit-and Run

UPDATE — Investigators were able to locate surveillance footage of the outstanding minivan. It is believed the van is a 2011 – 2020 Toyota Sienna. The vehicle is located in the background of the security footage. A computer rendering of the vehicle is also attached. The suspect vehicle’s damage would be at the front end.

CATHEDRAL CITY — A 68 year-old-man, whose identity is being withheld, was the victim of a hit-and-run about 3:30 a.m. today , according to Sgt. Daniel Anes.

The incident occurred on Date Palm Drive south of Gerald Ford.

In the pre-dawn hours today, Cathedral City Police Dispatch received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a vehicle had struck a pedestrian in the roadway on Date Palm Drive south of Gerald Ford. Officers arrived on scene and located the victim, who had sustained multiple injuries. Cathedral City Fire Department responded and transported the victim to Desert Regional Medical Center. The pedestrian is currently in the ICU listed in critical condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was in a wheelchair and attempted to cross east across Date Palm Drive outside of a marked crosswalk, according to Ames. A vehicle traveling southbound on Date Palm Drive struck the pedestrian and fled the scene without stopping. Moments later, a second southbound vehicle struck the pedestrian as he lay on the roadway.

According to Ames, a witness described the first vehicle as a white van, which was last seen continuing southbound over the Date Palm Drive Bridge. The driver of the second vehicle was interviewed by Cathedral City Police Traffic Bureau investigators and was evaluated for impairment. Impairment was ruled out.
