Residents Welcome to Attend Special Sept. 22 Virtual Meeting Regarding Proposed New Affordable Housing Project for Low-Income Seniors

PALM SPRINGS — For the second time in less than a week, residents are encouraged to attend a virtual meeting related to housing. Residents are are encouraged to participate in a special meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 22 to learn more about “Agave at Palm Canyon,” a proposed affordable housing project for low- income seniors.

The project would be located at the southwest corner of Stevens Road and North Palm Canyon Drive.

Earlier this week, the city of Palm Springs announced an informational meeting regarding a plan to convert the Ivy Palm Motel into affordable housing.

The 5:30 p.m. virtual meeting, will feature a presentation by the project developer, West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation. The meeting will be held via Zoom and public comments are welcome. Residents can participate by using this link.

As proposed, “Agave at Palm Canyon” features 71 one-bedroom units in a two-story structure with desert landscaping that would be built to LEED standards.

Amenities would include a resident community room, gym/fitness and laundry room, and private outdoor open space. A 3,000- to 4,000-square-foot commercial space facing Palm Canyon Drive is also proposed. In addition, the complex would feature comprehensive free-of-charge on-site support services for all residents, provided by Desert AIDS Project.

Plans will be submitted soon with more opportunities available to submit public comment this fall as the project is reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council.
