California is the #1 State for the Most Pets Named After St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day takes place on 17th March, to honor the patron saint of Ireland, and is now a global celebration of Irish culture.

But with 31.5 million Americans with Irish ancestry*, the celebrations are getting bigger each year, and are now even translating into pet names. Now, pet-sitting experts TrustedHousesitters reveal the most popular St. Patrick’s Day names across the country.

The top 5 St. Patrick’s themed names in the U.S. are::

  1. Finnegan/Finn
  2. Bailey
  3. Penny
  4. Murphy
  5. Lucky

Finnegan is the number 1 most popular St. Patrick’s name. It appears that rather than the classics, like Patrick and Paddy, Americans are steering away from obvious St. Patrick’s connotations and are instead taking inspiration from Irish names.

Classic Irish boy name, Finnegan, topped the list, with almost 400 pets with the name or variation of ‘Finn’. It was most prevalent in California, Washington, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, and New York.

It was closely followed by Bailey, a cultural nod to the Irish whisky and cream liquor, with 371 pets.

Penny is the most popular St. Patrick’s female pet name
Although not a traditionally Irish name, Penny, inspired by the round shiny things found in the pot at the end of a rainbow, is the most popular girls’ name. There were over 350 pets with the name, making it the most popular St. Patrick’s girl name.

Not far behind, Lucky was seen 141 times, hinting that many see the national holiday as a sign of luck, and have shared the love with their beloved pets!

Top 5 U.S. states with the most St Patrick’s-inspired pet names are:

  1. California
  2. Washington
  3. Colorado\
  4. Florida
  5. Texas

California topped the ranking by far for the state with the most pets with St. Patrick’s themed names. The state has more than double (310+) the number of names of second-place Washington, with 130+.

In fact, California is home to almost 100 Finnegans (98), 81 Baileys, and 45 Murphys. But special shout-outs go to the 19 Clovers and 9 Gunness, very on brand for the 17th March.

Western States nominate the ranking for St. Patrick’s pet names
The top 3 states in the ranking were dominated by Western States, with California first, and then Washington, and Colorado following closely in 2nd and 3rd place.

Although Irish ancestry is typically associated with the East Coast, especially states such as New York and Massachusetts, this ranking proves the nation is adopting this culture and incorporating it into its families.
