CATHEDRAL CITY – Like a jigsaw puzzle, piece by piece the highly anticipated Cathedral City Community Amphitheater is coming together that will culminate as one more jewel in this community’s developing treasure chest, better known as downtown.

About five months after the City Council broke ground on the $4.5 million amphitheater park, the City Council has voted to award a $1.675 million contract to Pasadena-based GKK Works/Cannon Design to construct the stage structure.

The City Council had earlier voted to award CS Legacy Construction Inc. a $1.6 million contract to build everything in the park except for the amphitheater, which paved the way for the groundbreaking in December.

Cathedral City Community Amphitheater AdvancesThe 2.5-acre Cathedral City Community Amphitheater is located at the corner of Avenida Lalo Guerrero and Cathedral Canyon Drive. The amphitheater park is currently under construction. It will include a permanent stage, walking trails, children’s play area, restrooms, concession stand, and infrastructure to host the city’s signature festivals such as the Balloon Festival, Taste of Jalisco, and LGBT Days. It will also be available to be leased for third-party promotions.  Once complete, the amphitheater is expected to play host to other events such as Movies in the Park, Shakespeare in the Park, Food Truck events, and general park uses.

It will feature theater-style seating and will serve as an anchor in the downtown entertainment district. The park will boast a seating capacity of 2,909 people for concerts.

Here is a recent city-produced video showing the progress being made so far.

Cathedral City has been actively rejuvenating its downtown district and commons area. The efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Twice in about a month, two of the biggest names in fashion – Yves Saint Laurent and Hollister Co. –hand-selected this community’s Downtown to serve as the backdrop for a photo shoot and a pop-up cosmetics station.

A wealth of projects has already been completed to showcase the Downtown, including new civic center complex and town square. This area includes city government offices, the police department, a cinema complex, a repertory theater, restaurants, a parking structure, and recreational amenities such as the Fountain of Life, and the Cathedral City Festival Lawn, which provides grass areas for outdoor enjoyment and festival events.

The park site will be completed in August 2019 and the stage structure is expected to be completed in December 2019.
