CATHEDRAL CITY – Move over “America’s Got Talent.” Coachella Valley’s Got Talent, too, and its stars are just waiting for their breakout moment with significant cash awards at stake.

The inaugural “Coachella Valley, Show Us Your Talent” competition is coming to Cathedral City in January 2019.  This free public event will showcase amateur talent from all over the Coachella Valley.

“Coachella Valley, Show Us Your Talent” provides a stage for Coachella Valley’s undiscovered and untapped talent.

Kristin Lehigh, who has been manager of the Cathedral City Library for about 10 months, said her former library, Home Gardens in Corona, hosted a similar talent completion.

“It was the most popular event at the Library, other than Santa Claus, of course,” Lehigh told Uken Report.

The competition attracted 10 to 15 acts, Lehigh said. The library, a branch of the Riverside County Library System, is much smaller than the Cathedral City Library. It catered to a low-income and large minority population. The acts were predominantly musical with lots of Hispanic music, Lehigh said.

She is hoping the “Coachella Valley, Show Us Your Talent” competition will draw between 20 and 30 acts that span a wide variety of talents. Lehigh also hopes to make it an annual event.

“I would be ecstatic,” she said. “While Cathedral City is home for this event, this is a valleywide competition.”

While some other libraries in the Coachella Valley showcase high-priced speakers’ series, Lehigh said she wants the Cathedral City Library to offer events that appeal to the working class.

“We want to give them something big that they don’t have to pay for,” Lehigh said.

Do you have a special talent?  Is there something you’re asked to do at every get-together?  Sing? Juggle? Card tricks? Dance? Tell jokes? Maybe you think — or have been told — that you have no talent but you’ve always had a secret desire to be onstage.  Here’s your chance.

Auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, with the final competition being held on Saturday, Feb. 2.  Cash prizes of $350, $225, and $100 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place finishers.

This event is sponsored by the Cathedral City Library (a branch of the Riverside County Library System) in partnership with the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission.
