Community Welcome and Encouraged to Attend DSUSD Wellness Fair

Community Welcome at DSUSD Wellness FairOn Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Indio High School, the Desert Sands Student Services team, with assistance from Riverside County Public Health and community partners, will hold a wellness fair. A COVID-19 vaccination clinic will also be on site. Elected officials and dignitaries are expected to participate in the 9:15 welcome address. County vaccination mascot Francine the Vaccine is expected to make an appearance.

Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Laura Fisher said in a letter to community partners, “This event will be an opportunity for you to introduce your services to the community and connect with them personally.” She went on to note that students of all ages along with their families and district staff are expected to attend the event.

Fisher commented that, “The goal of this event is to promote health and wellness for children, youth, and their families, by increasing awareness of local community agencies that can assist them in their daily lives.” There is no charge for the event either for attendees or community partners. Students from Indio High School will assist in the details of the wellness fair including directing attendees to the various workshops and presentations.

Response from local health providers has been positive and over 20 health providers have already registered to participate. Expected to provide information are: SafeHouse of the Desert, Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the County of Riverside Community Outreach, and more. In addition to personnel interacting with attendees at their respective tables, community partners have generously provided giveaways and will hold activities.

The Desert Sands Unified School District Wellness Fair will hold educational seminars on various health topics throughout the event including sessions on self-care, suicide prevention, and sexual exploitation.

The public throughout the Coachella Valley are invited to attend this free event focused on both physical well-being and emotional health. As with all activities taking place on a DSUSD campus, this event requires all participants to wear an approved face covering.
