CVUSD Candidate Files Complaint with Rivco DA

Adrian Rodriguez

MECCA — Adrian Rodriguez, a candidate for the upcoming election in the Coachella Valley Unified School District, has filed a formal complaint with the Riverside County District’s Attorney’s Office alleging that Area 4 Trustee Jocelyn Vargas recently purchased a home located outside of Area 4 and outside of the boundaries of the school district she represents.

In December 2024, Trustee Vargas made an offer on a home valued at $565,000 in Indio, which she successfully closed on January 21, 2025, according to the complaint. According to the Deed of Trust signed by Trustee Vargas on January 18, 2025, the property is to be used as her principal residence, and she is required to establish permanent residency within 60 days of the signing of the document. The Deed of Trust specifies that this residency must be maintained for at least one year following her signature on the deed, Rodrigues states in his complaint.

“Despite this,” Rodriguez writes, ” Trustee Vargas has publicly stated that she has not yet moved into the home. However, based on the Deed of Trust and the 60-day requirement for establishing residency, this raises significant concerns about her ability to serve her constituents in Area 4 in a manner consistent with the law.”

He asks the DA to investigate whether Trustee Vargas’s statements regarding her residence and intentions are accurate.

“Her actions and statements may be misleading to the constituents she serves, and it is crucial to ensure transparency and accountability in her role as a Trustee,” Rodriguez states.

In addition, Rodriguez has called on Vargas to resign.

Coachella Valley Teachers Association Carissa Carrera told Uken Report that filing the complaint was the proper thing to do “since Trustee Vargas has had the opportunity to clarify the situation, and she has not done so. She has stated that she neither plans to live in the newly purchased home nor does she plan to rent it. Does that mean it will remain vacant for four years if she wins the election? Or is there another plan in place that she isn’t sharing? We hope the SPS does their due diligence in the matter. It’s time for CVUSD to have honest, trustworthy board members who genuinely care about the students.”
