Donation Will Provide Chromebooks to Eastern Coachella Valley Students

EASTERN COACHELLA VALLEY – A local couple is spending nearly $10,000 to buy 26 Chromebooks for students in the Coachella Valley Unified School District’s high school Expanded Learning Afterschool Programs.

The devices will go to students in the eastern Coachella Valley who have the highest need and/or are going onto vocational training or higher education.

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez’s office helped coordinate the donation with the couple, who wishes to remain anonymous, and the school district.

“Thank you to the anonymous donor of these Chromebooks,” said Supervisor Perez. “This gift will make an impact in helping our local students and contributing to their education and success. This generous donation is inspiring and positive news.”

The Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees, at its meeting later today, is scheduled to approve the donation, in the amount of $9,881.24. The devices will be distributed by May.

Bea Gonzalez, coordinator for Expanded Learning Programs for the Coachella Valley Unified School District, stated: “In these challenging times, it is amazing to see that someone took the time to acknowledge the continued need and disparities that many students face in the south east end of the Coachella Valley. Thank you to the donors for this generous gift that will be a life changer for 26 students pursuing their dreams and ambitions. Thank you to the office of Supervisor V. Manuel Perez for coordinating this effort and for the continued support of our students.”

Coachella Valley Unified School District Trustee Adonis Galarza-Toledo was involved in coordinating the donation.

“It is truly inspiring to see the power of community come together and join forces for the betterment of our community,” said Coachella Valley Unified School District Trustee Adonis Galarza-Toledo. “The donation of these Chromebooks will allow 26 of our students to expand their toolbox and expand their resources when pursing their educational dreams. Through this pandemic, the digital divide became even more evident. Owning a laptop and having WiFi at home became no longer a luxury but rather a necessity to live. Thank you to the generous donors for this contribution, and to the 26 students who receive this gift: you now have the duty to make the best out of this and one day pay it forward.”
