PALM SPRINGS — Back by popular demand, the Palm Springs Public Library has announced that Drag Queen Story Hour featuring local diva Bella da Ball will resume this month.

The popular story hour begins Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Youth Room at the Library and will continue throughout the season every other month. The evening will begin with a craft, Bella will read a few stories, followed by dancing.

The craft for the first event will be making maracas in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month that can be used during the dance party at the end of the evening. Children of all ages are welcome to attend. Drag Queen story hour is designed to be an evening of fun for  the entire family.

Founded by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions out of San Francisco, Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like — drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models.

Drag Queen Story Hour is hosted at libraries across the country, from New York to Los Angeles to Palm Springs.

Bella da Ball is the Palm Springs’ area social ambassador and drag personality.  Bella da Ball is active in the community and has been recognized by many different organizations and has received numerous awards and honors, including being the recipient of a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, the Safe Schools Desert Cities Champion for Youth Award for LBGTQIA, Volunteer of the Year from Greater Palm Springs Pride, the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce P.S. I Love You award and was the inaugural “Community Sweetheart” at the Palm Springs 25th Festival of Lights parade last December.
