Kelly May-Vollmar expected to be named new Superintendent at Desert Sands Unified School District

LA QUINTA — Assistant Superintendent assistant superintendent for educational services, Kelly May-Vollmar. Ed.D., is expected to be hired as the next superintendent of the award-winning Desert Sands Unified School District when the Board of Education meets Tuesday, April 12, Uken Report has learned.

The board will be asked to approve the contract for employment for Dr. Kelly May-Vollmar to the position of Superintendent effective July 1, 2022. The term of her agreement would be from July 1, 2022, through midnight June 30, 2025.

If the contract is approved, May-Vollmar will replace Scott Bailey who announced his retirement effective June 30, 2022.  May-Vollmar is being recommended for the appointment following a national search and a robust interview and selection process.

Effective July 1, 2022, the Superintendent’s base salary will be $282,000 payable in 12 equal monthly installments.

May-Vollmar has worked at Desert Sands Unified for nearly 18 years, according to her LinkedIn profile. She began at the district as a teacher, became an elementary school principal and then an administrator. She holds a doctorate in education from the University of La Verne.

If appointed, May-Vollmar will oversee the valley’s largest school district, which is home to 34 schools, 2,800 employees and 27,000 students.
