Museum Trail Claims Life of Local Hiker

At approximately 7:50 a.m. Saturday, the Palm Springs Fire Department (PSFD) was dispatched in response to an emergency call from the Museum Trail, involving a male hiker in a critical condition, Palm Springs Police Lt. Gustavo M. Araiza said in a news release.

Despite the resuscitation efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of death is under investigation, with a possible medical emergency being considered as the preliminary cause.

The hiker has been identified as Andrew Scott Hollinger, 73, of Palm Springs by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Hollinger, a retired Art teacher, and coach within the Palm Springs Unified School District, was well-respected and beloved by many in our community. Adding to the depth of this loss, Andy was the son of John Hollinger, a founding member of the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit. This very unit, embodying his father’s legacy, assisted in Andy’s recovery efforts, according to Palm Springs Police.

The Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit, in collaboration with the coroner, conducted recovery operations for the decedent, a Palm Springs local. This tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities, even for the most experienced hikers.

In light of this incident, the Palm Springs Police Department encourages all hikers to remain vigilant about their health and safety while enjoying the natural beauty of our trails. We also remind everyone in our community of the importance of prompt emergency reporting to ensure immediate assistance when needed.
