Desert Healthcare District Board will consider new proposal from hospital operator for management of a local hospital at special public meeting on Sept. 18

The Desert Healthcare District and Foundation Board of Directors will have a special meeting today, Sept. 18, to consider a new proposal from Tenet Health for the future operation of Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC).

The Palm Springs hospital was built in 1948 by the Healthcare District, which currently retains ownership. In 1997, the District entered into a 30-year lease with Tenet to operate and manage the facility. The original lease expires in 2027.

Tenet Health now proposes to enter into a new agreement to operate DRMC for 30 years. The Board will be given a presentation at the special meeting by representatives of Tenet Health, which is based in Dallas, Texas. Presenters will include Saum Sutaria, MD, Tenet Health CEO and Chairman of the Board.

Tenet also currently owns and operates JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio and the Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, which are not affiliated with the Desert Healthcare District.

The public is invited to attend the special meeting in-person or virtually:

  • 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18
  • UCR Palm Desert Campus
  • Building B, Rooms B114-B117
  • 75080 Frank Sinatra Dr, Palm Desert, CA 92211
  • (complimentary parking)
