MLK Commemoration Day Celebration Set for Sunday, Jan. 15

INDIO — The annual MLK Commemoration Day Celebration will take place in the Coachella Valley’s largest city this year with proclamations from every city.

The Coachella Valley community is encouraged to join the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Day Committee, the City of Indio, and the Palm Springs Black History Committee at their annual MLK Commemoration Day Celebration in remembrance of the slain civil rights leader on Sunday, Jan. 15.

The celebration begins at 2 p.m. at Love of Christ Community Church, 43640 Burr St. in Indio. This year’s keynote speaker is Indio City Councilmember Waymond Fermon, who will be joined by youth speaker Genesis Triplett from Palm Desert High School. In addition, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and Palm Springs Mayor Grace Garner will be on hand. Proclamations from every city in the valley will be presented.

“The MLK Day Commemoration Committee, the City of Palm Springs Black History Committee and the city of Indio are proud to partner for this important event as we remember Dr. King and celebrate his extraordinary legacy,” said Jarvis Crawford, Chair of Commemoration Committee and manager of the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center in Palm Springs. “Everyone in the Coachella Valley is welcome to attend.”

The Mission of the Palm Springs Black History Committee is to promote unity to diverse cultures of the Coachella Valley and build a spirit of cooperation between the diverse cultures and educate about contributions of local African Americans in building the vibrant Coachella Valley.
