The pedestrian improvement project will construct new sidewalks and safety improvements in the community

Sidewalk-ProjectINDIO – Construction is set to begin on the city of Indio’s Herbert Hoover Elementary School Pedestrian Improvement project the week of Sept. 19, with crews starting work in Stage A on Valencia Avenue, then Luce Court.

The safety improvement project will install approximately 20,000 linear feet of new sidewalk on 13 streets in the neighborhood near the school. The project will be constructed in four stages and is expected to be completed in Fall 2023. A map of the improvements, including the designated stages, can be found on the project website by clicking here.

The project area in the neighborhood near Herbert Hoover Elementary School is bordered by Indio Boulevard to the north, Requa Avenue to the south, Monroe Street to the west and Deglet Noor Street to the east. Initial preconstruction work will take place in all four stages through September, then crews will focus on constructing new sidewalks and safety improvements in Stage A near the school.

Traffic control during pedestrian improvement project

Roads will be open during construction with traffic control in place to create a safe working area. Pedestrian access will be restricted where crews are working and there will be no parking near the construction zone during work hours. No Parking signs will be placed 48 hours in advance of work starting. The contractor is limited to work on only four streets at a time, and only on one side of the street, to maintain traffic and pedestrian flow in the neighborhood.

In addition to constructing new sidewalks, the project also will:

  • Remove and replace driveway concrete to adjust the grade and safely connect driveways with the
    new sidewalks.
  • Reconstruct 56 pedestrian access ramps to improve accessibility and meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
  • Improve or add new crosswalks at eight intersections in the construction area.

Work Hours are Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., until Nov. 6, 2022, when they change to
7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Residents impacted by construction will be notified by the bilingual project outreach team in advance. The project website www.HerbertHooverProject.com will provide the most updated information, and residents with questions or concerns may contact the outreach team using email at [email protected] or on the construction hotline at (888) 248-5007.
