Brian Penna Among Four Candidates Seeking Seat on Palm Desert City Council
INDIAN WELLS — All candidates in the Nov. 5 City Council election were given the opportunity to participate in a candidate questionnaire Uken Report distributed. Following are the responses from Brian Penna.
UR: Age and occupation:
Brian Penna: A: I am 56 years old, and for the past 21 years, I have served as a Corporate Controller.
UR: Who or what motivated you to run for the City Council?
Brian Penna: My motivation to run for the Indian Wells City Council is to preserve the future of our city and safeguard the quality of life for all residents. My goal is to leverage my extensive professional background and life experiences to contribute meaningfully to our city’s future. I also aim to uphold the legacy of excellence that defines Indian Wells and ensure its prosperity for generations to come.
UR: How long have you lived in Indian Wells full time?
Brian Penna: We have been vacationing annually in Indian Wells for roughly 20 years. My wife and I purchased a full-time residence and relocated here in 2021, and recently opening a second office in Indian Wells.
UR: What is your No. 1 priority for the city?
Brian Penna: It’s difficult to identify a single priority as there are multiple important issues facing Indian Wells. The city must stay current and relevant for future success, especially with the rapid growth of the Coachella Valley. My priorities include:
- Traffic, speeding, and public safety – Continuing to protect our city and residents.
- Indian Wells Golf Course redesign – Attracting more events and staying competitive as one of the top public golf courses in the country, benefiting both tourism and residents. Additionally, with the redesign and possibly repurposing part of hole 18 for additional needed parking to accommodate the growing number of rounds and the new Kestrel Restaurant.
- Upcoming capital improvements – A significant project is a development, by Genton, which could bring to Indian Wells its first five-star hotel, a Michelin-rated restaurant, and upscale condominiums, enhancing tourism and resident amenities.
UR: What makes you a better candidate than your opponents?
Brian Penna: I don’t personally know the other candidates campaign platforms and policies, and I won’t disparage them to benefit my campaign. I am running on my own merits and life experiences, and it is ultimately up to the voters to choose the best person for the Indian Wells City Council.
UR: Do you see yourself as a team player or someone who will fight for your opinion?
Brian Penna: In my lifetime, I have built and managed three successful companies. These experiences have instilled in me a deep understanding of business management and strategic development—essential qualities for city governance. I believe in collaboration, but I also know when it’s necessary to stand firm on important issues.
UR: How do you deal with conflict? Give us an example.
Brian Penna: Conflict can be addressed in many ways, but I prefer to handle it by gathering all relevant information and addressing the situation with facts, poise, and a goal of mitigating any acrimony. For example, in managing my businesses, I’ve always ensured that we approach conflicts with a fact-based understanding, seeking resolution rather than prolonging disputes.
UR: What is the biggest issue facing Indian Wells?
Brian Penna: I believe I have already covered this in response to the earlier question about priorities. There are several challenges the city faces, including growth, public safety, and strategic development projects.
