PALM SPRINGS — The local woman who became a fundraising powerhouse in a 2018 state Senate race has been tapped to be chair of Fundraising Committee for the Riverside County Democratic Party.
Joy Silver, a first time candidate who challenged incumbent Sen. Jeff Stone, R-La Quinta, in November 2018. routinely outpaced Stone in fundraising.
Throughout the race, Silver outraised Stone by more than $70,000. Her campaign raised more than $330,000 in contributions.
Silver has received financial support from labor groups and from political action committees that support female candidates for office, including the Women’s Political Committee and Fund Her PAC.
All the while, the Riverside County Democratic Party was watching her fundraising prowess.
Stone went on to win the election, but no one could deny Silver’s ability to raise money.
“This county is huge, and in order to have a strong California, we need a strong Riverside County,” Silver said. “Did you know that Riverside County is home to 2.42 million people, the fourth most-populous county in the state? We’re the 11th most-populous county in the country. More than 350,000 of those people are already Democrats, but we can do better, both at reaching our current members and bringing new people into the party.”
To cover all that ground and reach that many people is expensive, Silver said.
“I will be focusing my efforts on raising money to support our 2020 candidates and the massive Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts we’ll need to keep the momentum going into 2020,” she said.
The Riverside County Democratic Party will be hosting at least two major fundraising events, one this winter and one next spring, along with several smaller initiatives, Silver said.
“I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved! We will need the help of all Democrats to ensure victory in 2020,” she said.
Riverside County Democratic Party Chair, Tisa Rodriguez, weighed in on Silver’s ascent to fundraising chair. “Joy is tenacious and committed to the success of the Democratic Party and to Riverside County, and I’m excited to see her lead this fundraising effort. I expect great things from her.”
There’s room at this table for everyone who is committed to keeping the blue wave surging, Silver said.
