DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Scott Matas, 49, a lifetime resident of this community, is making another run to serve as mayor in the Nov. 3 election.

Matas, a property manager for Sun Communities, has served on the City Council since 2007 and was elected Mayor in 2015. Matas has one challenger: Steve Sanchez, who works in business development,.

The city of Desert Hot Springs has five elected officials including the mayor and four members of the City Council, elected at large. Commencing in 2020, the directly elected Mayor shall serve a four-year term with a term limit of two terms pursuant to Measure “V” passed by the voters in November 2018. Members of the City Council are elected for a four-year term.

Uken Report asked each candidate identical questions. Following are Matas’ unedited responses.

Uken Report (UR): Why specifically do you want to be mayor?

Scott Matas: I want to continue the progress began by my leadership as Mayor 4.5 years ago.

UR: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment either in or out of office?

Scott Matas: Since becoming Mayor Pedestrian/ Bike Safety was a top priority.  As Mayor we have been able to capture 6m in transportation funding to lower the rate of casualties along our busiest roadway Palm Drive.

UR: How do you define leader and leadership?

Scott Matas: A person that can listen and deliver.  My slogan this year is Realistic Vision, Real Results. I can give multiple examples of resident issues that turn into infrastructure improvements.

UR: Do you fit this definition?

Scott Matas: Yes

UR: What are your top three goals for DHS?

Scott Matas:  Moving forward –  Fiscal Stability, Economic Development and Community Programs.

UR: If you could change one thing about DHS, what would it be?

Scott Matas:  Faith. To many times I hear from our constituents that the progress over the last 4.5 years is great but can the city leadership continue this course of momentum that I have created as Mayor.
