CATHEDRAL CITY – One of the most anticipated events of year is this community’s LGBT Days’ Bed Race, which brings out the competitive spirit among participants, especially between the city’s Fire Department and Police Department.

Sure, winners of the competition receive some nice swag. But, there is so much more at stake between these two teams. The winners earn bragging rights for an entire year.

Let’s just say the Police Department has its work cut out for it.

Last year, the Cathedral City Fire Department won the fastest time, 19.52 seconds, in the Fourth Annual Cathedral City LGBT Days’ Bed Race. It was the department’s third consecutive win.

The time difference between the Cathedral City Fire Department team and the Cathedral City Police Department team was less than one second, at 0.76 of a second. College of the Desert bed race team was even closer to the second place position with less than a second away from the Cathedral City Police Department at 0.25 of a second, according to the city of Cathedral City. Here are the results of the Top 5 fastest teams in 2018:

  • Cathedral City Fire Department 19.52 seconds
  • Cathedral City Police Department 20.28 seconds
  • College of the Desert 20.53 seconds
  • Cathedral City Administration 21.8 seconds
  • Diversity DHS 24.3 seconds

The Cathedral City Fire Department team won five Schwinn mountain bikes, one for each team member, for coming in first. They generously donated the bikes to the Cathedral City Boys and Girls Club.

Anyone can enter the beloved Bed Race. It’s a chance to promote your business or organization and have a great time. This year’s Fifth Annual LGBT Days Bed Race will be Saturday morning, March 30.

The event is lovingly referred to as Cathedral City’s “Pride Parade on Wheels.”

Bed Races During LGBT Days Ignite CompetitionHost Bella da Ball will host the morning’s activities that promise a little drama and suspense, according to Chris Parman, Communications/Events Manager.  Entertainment starts at 10:15 a.m. and the race begins at 1 a.m. Teams of five are encouraged to sign-up now, decorate a float on wheels, step into some racing shoes or fancy pumps, and race for the coveted winner’s trophy.

Four individuals will push one person sitting on the bed from the rainbow step off on Avenida Lalo Guerrero and end at the finish line in front of City Hall. Fans and spectators line the street and cheer as the beds race, sashay or simply saunter by to the finish line

There is a new category for 2019 – Parade-only non-race entry.

You can soak up the spectacle of the bed race and parade your entry up and down Avenida Lalo Guerrero during the Parade of Beds. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded for best decorated entries, Best Theme Bed and Most Spirited Team. Volunteers can enjoy the fun of a community event and not feel like they need to be Olympians to compete in a race, according to Parman.

There is no fee to enter. You may click here to enter.

Cathedral City LGBT Days are set for March 29-31, featuring the International Acclaimed House Artist Beth Sacks and the infamous LGBT Days’ Bed Race on Saturday, March 30, 2019.
