With Valentine’s Day around the corner and about 34 percent of all U.S. adults having never been married, do not despair if you’re in California. The Golden State is 2020’s second best state in the nation for singles, according to WalletHub.

To help unattached Americans improve their chances of finding love, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 29 key indicators of dating-friendliness. The data set ranges from share of single adults to movie costs to nightlife options per capita.

Bottom line: Finding your “person” or your “soul mate” is all about location, location, location. It’s easier to date where there are nice place to eat and places to go. California ranks No. 1 in both the number of movie theatres and restaurants per capita.

Dating in California (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • 9th – % of Single Adults
  • 5th – Online-Dating Opportunities
  • 7th – Mobile-Dating Opportunities
  • 1st – Restaurants per Capita
  • 1st – Movie Theaters per Capita

The No. 1 state for singles is Florida. In third place is Texas, followed by New York and Pennsylvania.

West Virginia brings up the rear in 50th place. It only bested by Arkansas at 49, North Dakota is in 48th place, New Mexico ranks 47, and Wyoming comes in 46,

WalletHub asked Paul Rose, Ph.D., Associate Dean, School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, what singles should look for when choosing where to live.

“Plenty of research on human happiness points to the importance of strong, fulfilling relationships for living a satisfying life,” Rose said. “Therefore, all people, including singles, should consider places to live where they are most likely to enjoy strong friendships and other types of human connections that make life enjoyable.”
