Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) is No. 27 on Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care 2020

PALM SPRINGS — “Treat your employees like they make a difference … and they will” is a guiding principle at Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC), put into action through its Employee Success Program. In 2020, DOHC employees showed their partnership with management in greater ways than ever before.

“The coronavirus pandemic has turned the world upside down for almost everyone and 2020 has been one of the most challenging years that most of us can remember in our lifetimes,” said Dr. Marc Hoffing, Medical Director of Desert Oasis Healthcare. “That’s why I am so proud of how our employees have met the daily challenges of COVID-19 and continued to provide excellent care to our patients.”

As the pandemic hit California in March, Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) quickly provided clinical staff with the necessary personal protection equipment (PPE) and transitioned to work-from-home jobs for nonclinical staff. DOHC also formed a COVID-19 Task Force that provided the latest information and updates to staff through its employee intranet and to its patients and other visitors to MyDOHC.com, the company website. In the earliest days of the pandemic, DOHC also worked with NBC Palm Springs to produce a public service announcement with community partners Eisenhower Health and Desert Care Network.

A commitment to employee excellence and success DOHC shares with others

In determining the Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care & Biopharma 2020 list, Fortune Magazine enlisted the services of the namesake analytics firm that had already bestowed Great Place to Work® recognition on DOHC for two consecutive years. Best Workplaces rankings were determined by analyzing anonymous survey feedback from nearly 800,000 employees working in the Healthcare & Biopharma industry in the U.S.

DOHC’s Employee Success Program commits to the health and wellness of its staff with offerings that include lunchtime sessions for yoga, vegan cooking, stress reduction in the workplace, parenting and bereavement support, as well as weekend and after-hours programs for hiking, weight loss management, smoking cessation, and much more. HARC – Health Assessment and Research for Communities – recognized this commitment to employee self-actualization at its inaugural Coachella Valley Workplace Wellness Awards.

“When the independent panel of judges voted DOHC as the first Grand Prize winner of their Workplace Wellness Awards in 2016 we were pleased and flattered to be recognized for our work in prioritizing employee health and wellness,” said Dr. Teresa Hodgkins, VP of Clinical Quality Initiatives at DOHC. “When we won the award for the second consecutive year, we thought it was time to remove ourselves from award consideration and become the presenting sponsor of the awards – which we’ve done every year since – so that we could help HARC advance workplace wellness for others in the Coachella Valley and beyond.”

Although Desert Oasis Healthcare appreciates awards and accolades like being #27 on the Fortune Best Workplaces in Health Care 2020, the real reward comes with increased employee morale and productivity, as well as decreased absenteeism and health care costs. Dr. Hoffing said. “As we are all tested in the new and different ways we have been with COVID-19, we have evidence every day that the employees of DOHC all have the same goals: providing the best quality care for our patients while practicing self-protection and concern for our fellow employees.”
