When Choosing an Elementary School, Consider James Madison or James Monroe

Home of the Patriots

By Principal Scott Davis

James Madison Elementary School in Indio is home to the proud Patriots. Madison is a small neighborhood school with an amazing group of teachers, staff, and families working in harmony. The 2019-2020 school year brought cheerleading and flag football teams to our school.

Our students attend 5th grade science camp, loving the outdoor school experience. Madison is currently undergoing modernization construction and our team is designing a new school vision for this academic year that will enhance student-learning opportunities.

Our Madison family includes teachers who began here when the school first opened in the 90s and current students are children of former Madison attendees. This builds a culture of connection and support.

The modernization plan includes the demolition and reconstruction of the kindergarten facility, a state-of-the art building. Existing classrooms are being modernized to include the latest standards in educational classroom technology, including multiple large format display screens (LFDs), to engage students and provide them with interactive experiences to enrich learning. Desert Sands Unified School District provides each student with technology devices. In addition, our conventional library has a large collection of books. One of the favorite events at Madison is Dr. Seuss Night, featuring a carnival-like atmosphere celebrating literature and the arts.

Madison is an award-winning school, recognized both as a Civics Learning Award School and Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship Certified School.

The Mustang Family

Greetings from the James Monroe Elementary School – the Mustang Family!

The 2019-20 school year was a whirlwind. Thank you to our wonderful students for their hard work during school closure. Thank you to our awesome parents for their partnership in keeping their children engaged in their learning. At the heart of learning is change and this has certainly reigned true for our staff this year. This was an amazing learning journey as we navigated new ways to deliver and differentiate instruction while continuing our commitment to providing a stellar education for students.

Monroe Elementary has been honored as a California Distinguished School both in 2018 and again in 2020. Only one percent of schools in California have had this honor. Monroe attributes student achievement to a unique instructional delivery model that ensures equity for our students. Teachers in grades second through fifth rotate to classrooms for specific content instruction. Students have a homeroom teacher and have separate teachers for math, writing, and reading. Teachers receive specialized professional development in a designated subject area (early literacy, math, or writing) that enables them to teach at greater depth and level of complexity within a single subject matter. We are proud to also say we are an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elementary school!

The 2020-2021 school year brings us continued flexibility with regards to an instructional delivery model. We look forward to our continued partnership with our families in meeting the needs of our students. #Mustangfamily!
