All 16 Expanded Learning Programs reopened Monday, May 10, 2021 following all site and district safety protocols.

Desert Sands Unified School District currently operates Expanded Learning Programs or ASES at 13 elementary schools and three middle schools. The 2020-21 school year is our 14th successful year of programming. Although the pandemic required a strategic shift in how services to our students and families were delivered, Expanded Learning Programs continue to focus on helping improve overall attendance and performance levels through academic and enrichment activities that align and support the regular school day.

Programs consist of two components. An Academic Enrichment period focusing on tutoring and homework assistance designed to help students meet grade level standards, and an Educational Enrichment period offering activities such as music, dance, arts, and athletics that promote positive youth development.  All students participating in an after school program are also provided with a nutritional snack/meal each day.

Expanded Learning Programs made a successful transition to support distance learning while maintaining COVID protocols. During the pandemic, after school staff actively provided support to the regular day classrooms. Virtual student support services included individualized tutoring, supporting breakout rooms, providing online enrichment, assisting with distributions, and office support just to name a few.

Desert Sands Unified School District is excited to announce that all 16 Expanded Learning Programs reopened Monday, May 10, 2021 following all site and district safety protocols. In cooperation with the Boys & Girls Club of the Coachella Valley and the Desert Recreation District, students are welcome to stay after school for up to three hours from the dismissal bell. Hands-on learning activities and engaging enrichment is again being offered at all locations that align with the quality standards. All after school programs strive to support these five learning principles*: learning that is active, learning that is meaningful, learning that is collaborative, learning that supports mastery, and learning that expands horizons.
