FIND Food Bank Partners with Desert Cities and Businesses for Hunger Action Month
INDIO— For Hunger Action Month® this September, FIND Food Bank will join Feeding America and 200 network food banks to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of locals facing food insecurity.
Hunger remains at critical levels in California, exacerbated in the desert by prolonged unemployment, record heat waves, and the end of unemployment benefits. FIND is engaging with the public through fundraising and awareness events to leave no local hungry during the ongoing recovery efforts.
“Our desert region is unique because of the natural spirit of service,” Debbie Espinosa, CEO of FIND Food Bank, said in a prepared statement. “Our food lines increased by 110% last summer, and this year it remains 60% higher than pre-pandemic levels. Residents want to care for their neighbors, whether that means sharing the food they received at a distribution, volunteering in triple-digit heat to ensure no one goes hungry, and donating generously to put a meal on everyone’s plates. This culture of care helped us to double the amount of food we distributed this last year to strengthen our resilient communities.”
Feeding America’s national campaign highlights the impossible choices that millions of Americans must make between food and other basic needs – such as housing, medicine, electricity, or childcare. FIND, and the network of Feeding America food banks are asking the public to make a choice too – How will you choose to end hunger?
During the month of September, businesses, city governments, and individuals across the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert can get involved in the movement by donating, volunteering, learning, and speaking up about ways to end hunger.
Go Orange
Nine Desert cities are lighting up orange for September. Orange is the color of hunger awareness because it stands out when hunger is too often a hidden issue. When you see a city hall or monument lit orange, take a moment to speak out about hunger online, sign up for a volunteer event, or donate to support your neighbors facing food insecurity.
Dine, Shop, and Donate for Hunger Relief
Restaurants, hotels, retail stores, and entertainment venues across the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert are offering special food and beverage items, events, fundraisers, retail specials, and food drives, with a portion of proceeds going to support FIND Food Bank’s hunger relief efforts.
