Mary Pickford Free Movies for Kids summer event proposed.

CATHEDRAL CITY — For the past few years, the Parks and Community Events Commission has provided volunteer support for the Mary Pickford Free Movies for Kids Summer Event. This summer will be no different.

The Mary Pickford Theater in downtown Cathedral City is again proposing to provide children and family members an opportunity to see a free movie on a designated day, every week from June to August over an 8-week period, according to a staff report.

In the past, PACE Commissioners have provided volunteer support in distributing movie passes and collection of the movie passes at the theater on each day of the event.

This year, Parks and Community Events Commissioners Antonio Baciu and Angel Herrera met with Ted Hanes, General Manager of the Mary Pickford to confirm details regarding this year’s upcoming 2023 Mary Pickford Free Movies for Kids Summer Event. As a result, it was proposed offering free water and a small popcorn for the first 50 kids at each event during the 8-week period would step up PACE’s commitment and help make this program more inviting. Both Commissioners and the General Manager agreed on this idea as adding the best value to the event.

The cost for this participation is proposed to be $400 from the FY 2022/2023 PACE Small Events Budget. Baciu told Uken Report it was unused yoga money because two classes were canceled due to inclement weather. Baciu said he proposed using the money for free popcorn and water at the last PACE meeting.

The Communications and Events Division of the City has budgeted $1,500 from the FY 2023/2024 budget to cover the cost of the film itself.
